William T. O'Brien, 83, of Wilkes Barre, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
Born in Trenton, NJ, on July 7, 1938, he was a son of the late William and Mary O'Brien.
After graduation from Trenton Central High School, he served in the United States Navy. William married the love of his life, Barbara and was a firefighter for the City of Trenton for 27 years, retiring as Assistant Chief Inspector. He was active in the Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association local 6 and served as a former President of the union. He was very involved in his community as a founder of the Mercer County Emerald Society and long-term brother and past President of the Trenton Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was also a former member of the Cook Athletic Association and reveled with his fellow veterans at the Mountain Top American Legion, Post 781, VFW and other Veteran Organizations. "OBie" enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing with family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara A. (Maugans) O'Brien; sons, William T. III (Kathleen), NJ, Kevin P. O'Brien, CA; precious granddaughter, Tara O'Brien; and brother, James O'Brien. William is also survived by in-laws, nieces and nephews and great friends. William was preceded in death by his parents William and Mary O'Brien and his sister, Patricia O'Brien.
William was a former member of St. Anthony's Church, Trenton, NJ, and a member of St. Jude's Parish, Mountain Top, PA. Services and interment will be held at 10:30 AM, on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that a memorial donation be made to VA Wilkes-Barre Healthcare System at Veterans Affairs Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, Voluntary Service Office (01/10), 1111 East End Boulevard, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711.
