Robert Norton Obituary

Robert Severn Norton, 81, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021 at SpiriTrust Lutheran, The Village at Sprenkle Drive, York. He was the loving husband of Betty Jean Norton who passed away December 12, 2018.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on April 7, 1939, Bob was the son of the late John S. and Helen (Shakalum) Norton.

He attended Elmer L. Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre and while in high school was an active member of the Naval Reserve.

He graduated with the Class of 1957 and upon completion of graduation joined the United States Navy where he served as a radar specialist.

He was assigned to the USS Mississinewa (AO-144) stationed in Naples, Italy, which had the task of refueling US Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea.

Upon his return home from the United States Navy, Bob was briefly working for a local Printing Company until he began working for United Parcel Service.

He was one of the first two employees hired at United Parcel Service at the then new Dupont Facility… and enjoyed having the majority of Sullivan County as his delivery route.

Bob was employed by United Parcel Service, Dupont, PA until retiring after 43 years of service.

He was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartets Singing in America where he sang Bass for their chorus as well as singing Bass for his own Quartet --- Touch of Class.

Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors.

He was a member of Firwood United Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Betty and Bob were married on August 24, 1963. Sharing over 55 years of Love, Devotion and the Pricelessness of just wanting to spend every moment together.

His grandchildren stand as shining examples of that love and commitment.

Mr. Norton is survived by two children, Robert S. Norton Jr. of Nanticoke, PA and Dr. Kimberly N. Kurland and husband Dr. Thomas F. Kurland of York, PA; three grandchildren, Thomas Florian Kurland Jr., Emily Nicole Kurland and Madison Lauren Kurland; sister, Carol and sister-in-law, Beverly J Norton, both of Wilkes-Barre; several cousins; two nephews as well as great-niece and great-nephews.

In addition to his loving wife Betty J. Norton, Bob was proceeded in death by his brother, John W. Norton.

A celebration of life service will be at 11:00 am Friday January 15,2021 at Kniffen O’Malley Leffler Funeral & Cremation Services, 465 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA. with interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Viewing will begin at 10:00 am (one hour prior to the service) and is open to the public.
