Edward J. Umphred, 96, died Friday, February 26.
A graduate of Coughlin High school, Edward saw active duty in Europe during WWII. He chose a lifelong career as a printer at the Wilkes-Barre Sunday Independent Newspaper, eventually becoming the foreman there.
Edward served as an officer at the VFW, Kingston.
Edward is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Marie Umphred; his wife, Alice and brothers Francis, Lee and William.
Surviving are brother, Mark, Wilkes-Barre: sons Neal (and Bernadine), Redmond, Wash. Charles (and Cynthia) West Wyoming; daughter, Maryalice, Forty Fort; grand-daughter, Ananda and great grand-son Jayce, Boise, Idaho.
A dear family friend, Judy Kleinman wrote "Although he lived a relatively ordinary life, he was an extraordinary man whose thirst for knowledge, fairness and kindness knew no bounds motivated him in everything he did......the world has lost a shining star from the Greatest Generation."
Edward was a member of St. Ignatius Loyola Church.
