Sylvia M. (Goginsky) Severnak, 91, of Port Griffith, passed away on March 28, 2025 at Allied Hospice, Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Moosic, she was the daughter of the late John and Lena (Dinoski) Goginsky.
As a young woman Sylvia worked for Prudential Insurance and as a dance instructor for Arthur Murray. She later worked at Pomeroy’s/Bon Ton for over 30 years until she retired in 2007 to help care for her grandchildren. After retiring, she enjoyed attending the Jenkins Township Senior Center, visiting Casinos, doing word puzzles, spending time with family, and attending parish events at St. John the Baptist, now combined with St. John the Evangelist in Pittston.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Joseph G. Severnak; sisters Mary Ann, Helen, Audrey, Antoinette and Bernardine; brothers, John, Thomas, Raymond, Joseph (Pete), and William.
Surviving are three loving children, Kevin Severnak, Pittston, Lisa Severnak-Silva and husband Peter, Duryea, and George Severnak and wife Nancy, Pittston. Sylvia was blessed with 5 grandchildren, Richard and Chris Jolicoeur (Aleese), Erin Nates-Severnak (Christina) and Jacob and Cole Severnak-Silva, and 3 great grandchildren, Ronni Nates-Severnak, Keeley and Emlynn Jolicoeur. She is also survived by two sisters, Gloria O’Brien and Marcella (Dave) Roberts, brother-in-law Jack Severnak and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5th, 11:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist, 35 William Street, Pittston. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made to St. John the Evangelist Parish, or a charity of your choosing are welcome.
