Robert “Bob” J. Matthews, 88, of Avoca, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore.
Born on August 17, 1936, in W. Pittston, he was the son of the late Russell S. and Helen (Biggar) Matthews.
Bob worked for over 40 years as a bus driver for Martz Trailways. In retirement, he worked for Avis at the airport.
He was an avid Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Phillies fan.
Bob was a member of Avoca Hose Company #1 for over 70 years, he was the only member who served as the Rescue Chief, retiring that position in his honor. He was a founding member of the Avoca Ambulance.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Patricia “Pat” (Albert Matthews, who passed on February 26, 2021, his daughter, Sheila M. (Matthews) Pitts, who passed away on June 5, 2020.
Bob is survived by his loving daughters, Patricia Strelecki, Avoca, Elaine O’Brien, Avoca, and JoAnn Nayavich and her husband, David, W. Wyoming, loving sons, Thomas Matthews and Dolores, Avoca and Kenneth Matthews, Avoca, 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, loving sister, Lois Wolfe, Duryea, several nieces, and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 4th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Kniffen O’Malley Leffler Funeral & Cremation Services, 728 Main Street, Avoca.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, September 5th, at 10:00AM at the funeral home with Pastor Bruce Jordon officiating. Interment will follow in Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca.
