Mary Pomanek, 94, of Wilkes-Barre passed away on January 18, 2016. She was the daughter of Peter and Mary Chernauskas Misunas. She was a WW II veteran, having served as one of the first women in the Waves division of the US Navy. Mary was a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, graduating from E.L. Meyers in 1939. She also attended Wilkes University. She was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Township Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing bingo. She was also a member of the Red Hat group "Young at Heart".
She was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 2002 and siblings William Misunas, Peter Misunas and Helen Thomas.
Mary is survived by her son Edward and wife Lorrie, daughter Mary Susan Elias and her husband Joseph; four grandchildren: Brian Pomanek and wife Kate, Heidi Pomanek Pollack and husband Jack, Amy Elias Bellanca and husband Andrew and Amber Elias; seven great grandchildren: Jack, Tessa and Mia Pollack, Mason, Paisley and Piper Pomanek and Alex Bellanca.
Mary was a kind and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother "Gigi" as she was affectionately called. She will be missed.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family in honoring her wishes.
