John J. “Lumpy” Mendygral, 73, of Harveys Lake, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at his home. Born on October 24, 1952, Lumpy was a son of the late John J. and Edna S. (Feist) Mendygral of the Lee Park Section of Hanover Township.
He was a graduate of Hanover High School where he was a District Champion wrestler. Right after graduating, he went to work at A. Rifkin where he was a Cutting Department supervisor for over 50 years. For many years he umpired local baseball and softball games and also coached his son’s baseball team. He was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan his whole life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, the former Jill Otscavich, who passed away on February 4, 2026. A brother, James Mendygral, also preceded him in death.
Surviving are his sons, John Matthew and his wife, Nicole of Dallas; Justin Todd and Jordan of Wendell, NC; grandsons, Tyler, Mason, Madden and Grayson; step grandchildren, Cadence, Blake and Nathan Stravinski; brothers, Peter and his wife Susan; Joseph and Thomas; sisters, Jane Welebob, who was a great help to Lumpy, and her husband Michael and Maryetta Chapin; numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Chloe.
A memorial service will be held at 7p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026 at Kniffen O’Malley Leffler Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc., 465 South Main St., Wilkes-Barre. Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Durham or Duke Children’s Hospital.
