George Nicholas Benetos, 75, of Plains Township, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2023, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital.

He was born on November 8, 1947, in Astoria, New York, to the late Nicholas and Angela (Stragalas) Benetos.

George dedicated his life to his passion as a Harness Horse Driver Trainer. He found immense joy in his work at Mohegan Sun Pocono Downs, where he formed deep connections with the horses he trained. George's dedication and expertise made him a respected figure in the harness racing community.

George is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Despina "Diane" (Christoforou) Benetos. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their unwavering commitment and love for each other. He will be deeply missed by his three children: Nicholas Benetos and his wife, Deborah, of Bayside, NY; Christopher Benetos and his wife, Radia, of Ashley, PA; and Angela Hartner and her husband, Vern, of Columbus, OH.

He was a proud grandfather to Aidan and Melia Benetos, who brought immeasurable joy and happiness into his life. George also leaves behind his brother, John Benetos of Lydenhurst, NY, and his sister, Kiki Fieger of Astoria, NY.

The viewing will be held from the 1:00 PM till 4:00 PM on Saturday at Kniffen O'Malley Leffler Funeral & Cremation Services, located at 465 S. Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.

Father Gabriel Nicholas will officiate a ceremony at 1:00 PM.
