Jill Hope Garrett of Shickshinny, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at home after a long battle with dementia.
Born August 7, 1954 in New York, she was the daughter of the late Carlton and Mary Garrett.
She is survived by brothers Carlton Jr. and wife, Patricia; Ray and wife, Carol; Stephen and his wife, Sue; sister, Mary Carol; nephew Alexander Garrett; uncle Roger Garrett and wife, Doris; aunts, Madeline Bronson and Gwen Garrett and aunt, Martha Chatham.
She was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre.
She worked as a receptionist/secretary at radio station WBAX/Edwardsville; WVIA; various other television stations in Texas, Ohio and New York. Then as a reporter, anchor, and health beat reporter for WNEP-TV Channel 16 starting in 1990.
Jill volunteered during the 1972 Agnes Flood to do clerical work and aid displaced families housed at G.A.R. High School where the American Red Cross was caring for flood victims. She also helped organizing the food for a picnic she had arranged for the displaced families during a press conference at Wilkes University that was attended by President Richard Nixon. The next day White House chefs and a refrigerated truck filled with food arrived. Jill volunteered with other organizations and especially loved working with animals at the Cincinnati Zoo.
She was a member of the South Wyoming Valley Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and enjoyed talking about her faith with others.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kniffen O’Malley Leffler Funeral and Cremation Services. A virtual memorial service will be held Saturday, July 17th 2021 3pm EST.
