Joseph T. Powell, Jr.

Joseph T. Powell Jr., 73 of Edwardsville, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Hospice Care Unit of the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on December 11, 1942, the son of the late Joseph T. Powell, Sr. and Cecelia Gibney.

Joe was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Class of 1962.  He was a proud and decorated veteran of our Armed Forces.  He served two tours overseas as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army 101st Airborne division during the Vietnam conflict.  After his return, he spent most of his career in the service industry.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a Community Support Worker with the Northeast Region of Step By Step where his nurturing personality touched the lives of the clients he cared for.

Joe enjoyed nature and being outdoors. He was a great conversationalist and enjoyed meeting new people.  He enjoyed talking politics and current events. Mostly, he loved spending as much time as he could with his family.  He never missed the weekend breakfasts, family dinners, holiday gatherings or special occasions.  His unconditional love, support, friendship, daily conversations and his whimsical story-telling of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas brought so much joy to all who were blessed to be a part of his life.

Joe was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his brother, John Covell, sisters Eileen Tipton and Margaret Pruce and cousin Anita Pascucci.

Joe is survived by his sister, June Verry and her husband William Bolinski, Hanover Township, and many nieces and nephews.

A devoted brother, loving uncle and dear friend, Joe will be missed greatly but his warm spirit and bright smile will live on in our hearts forever.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at St. Mary’s Chapel, Hanover Township at the convenience of the family.  Kniffen O’Malley Leffler Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. is assisting with the arrangements.
